Why choose Udaipur for a destination wedding?
Udaipur, the City of Lakes in southern Rajasthan, brings together lakes, palaces and heritage architecture in a compact city. Couples can choose between palace hotels, lakeside resorts, heritage havelis and garden or lawn venues, often with guest rooms on site, so families can stay where they celebrate.
Because the city is small, guests can move between the hotel, the celebrations and a little sightseeing without long transfers, which makes multi-day weddings easier to host.
When is the best time for a wedding in Udaipur?
| Months | What to expect | Planning note |
|---|---|---|
| October to March | The main wedding season. Pleasant days and cool evenings, roughly 5–25°C. | The busiest months for venues and hotels. Start early for popular dates. |
| April to June | Hot, often above 40°C in the day. | Favour evening and indoor celebrations; venues are usually easier to secure. |
| July to September | Monsoon. Green hills and full lakes, with rain showers. | Plan an indoor or covered alternative for every outdoor function. |
Auspicious dates in the wedding season are the first to go. If your family is following a muhurat, share it early so venue options can be checked against it.
How many days should a Udaipur wedding be?
There is no fixed rule. Most destination weddings in Udaipur follow one of these shapes, and you can plan a single celebration with us or several days.
- One day: the wedding ceremony, often followed by a reception dinner.
- Two days: mehendi and haldi with a sangeet evening, then the wedding.
- Three days: a welcome gathering, mehendi, haldi, sangeet, the wedding and a reception.
Count meals as well as functions. A three-day wedding usually means breakfasts, lunches and dinners for guests who are staying, not only the main events.
| Sample two-day plan | Day 1 | Day 2 |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Guest arrivals, check-in, welcome | Breakfast, haldi |
| Afternoon | Lunch, mehendi | Lunch, rest, getting ready |
| Evening | Sangeet and dinner | Baraat, wedding ceremony, dinner or reception |
| Sample three-day plan | Day 1 | Day 2 | Day 3 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Morning | Arrivals, check-in | Breakfast, haldi | Breakfast, pheras if a morning muhurat |
| Afternoon | Welcome lunch | Lunch, mehendi | Lunch, departures or the wedding |
| Evening | Welcome dinner or cocktail | Sangeet and dinner | Wedding or reception |
Fit the schedule around the muhurat, the venue's sound curfew and how far the families are travelling.
How do guests get to Udaipur?
- By air: Maharana Pratap Airport (UDR) at Dabok is about 22 km east of the city, around 30–40 minutes by road. It has domestic flights; international guests usually connect through a major Indian airport such as Delhi or Mumbai.
- By rail: Udaipur City railway station is in the city. From Delhi, overnight trains such as the Chetak Express and the Mewar Express arrive in the morning; book early in the wedding season.
- On arrival: plan airport and station transfers in groups by flight or train times, with a welcome desk at the hotel so arrivals are expected.
Share an arrivals list (names, flights or trains, times) a few weeks before the wedding. It is the single most useful document for transfers and check-ins.
What should you ask a wedding venue in Udaipur?
A beautiful venue still has to fit your plan. Ask every shortlisted venue these questions before you decide:
- Capacity for each function: seated dinner, standing (floating) and theatre-style numbers are different.
- Rooms on site, and how many can be blocked for your dates.
- An indoor or covered alternative for each outdoor space.
- Sound curfew: until what time music can play outdoors.
- Catering and décor policy: in-house only, approved vendors, or outside vendors (and any fee).
- Rules on open fire (for the pheras), fireworks and alcohol licences.
- Access for the baraat, and space for vendors to set up.
When should you book each part of the wedding?
| When | What to do |
|---|---|
| 9–12 months before | Fix dates and a rough guest count; shortlist and book the venue and room block. |
| 6–9 months | Décor direction, catering style, photography and entertainment. |
| 3–6 months | Invitations, guest travel information, menus and the function schedule. |
| 1–3 months | Arrivals list, room allocation, final numbers and the day-by-day timeline. |
| The week of the wedding | Final walkthrough, vendor timings, the transfer plan and a contact sheet for everyone. |
Starting 6–12 months ahead gives the most choice. Closer dates are often still possible; options depend on availability.
